Cari suddenly woke up. Where was she? Her heart was pounding, a nightmare, a dark man stalking her with the intent to kill her, rattling her and shaking her awake in terror. A small light was on the wall, and she slowly realized as she pushed strands of hair away from her face, where she was.

Making a frustrated sound, she got up, her boots nearby. Hearing nothing, she pulled them on and laced them up, standing, looking around the silent, large room that had four beds in it. Grateful that Pepper allowed her to use the room, she wiped her eyes. There was a clock with radium dials above the door. It was 3:00 p.m. ! She’d slept a lot!

Instantly, her heart focused on Chase. Where was he? Did he know what had happened? Trying to settle her emotions down, moving into that peaceful place she always went to when working with the bee people, she felt better. Calmer. That was good.

Opening the door, she stepped out into the empty women’s locker room. It was quiet, unlike her world that had been turned upside down. Going to the bathroom, she washed her hands, dried them on several paper towels, and glanced into the mirror. She looked scared. Or maybe it was her imagination. She used her fingers to comb through her mussed hair, satisfied that it was in place in a coherent way.

Moving to the door, she pulled it open. Across the green tiled hall were a series of cubicles, each surrounded in glass. When she saw Chase sitting with Pepper in one of them, her heart thudded hard in her chest. The desire to run to him, cry out her terror, wanting his arms around her, coursed through Cari.

Thankfully, her mature side understood that it was up to her to handle herself and her emotions. No man was ever going to do that for her. Compressing her lips, she watched them for a moment, getting herself together. Two hours had passed since the incident had happened. Did Pepper know anything else? Had Dan been able to follow Dirk? Need to know drove her forward. As she passed the cubicle, she saw them both raise their heads in her direction at the same time. She gave them a weak smile and raised her hand, heading around the group of offices and coming in the open door where they sat.

Chase, upon spotting her, was on his feet instantly, and she saw his raw concern for her. There was no mistaking how he felt, but he remained where he was. Pepper also stood.

“Hey, you look a lot better,” Pepper greeted her. “How are you feeling, Cari?”

Hesitating at the doorway, she croaked, “Better, I guess.” She looked at Chase, feeling waves of emotion pouring off him even though he’d said nothing. “Have you found out anything else?” she asked the woman.

Pepper nodded. “Listen, why don’t you sit down and Chase will fill you in. Can I get you anything? I need to go check in with the comms room.
